Fractal: Luísa Mota

13 May - 10 June 2023

Fractals, 2015-2023

Stainless steel, photographs, MDF.

Fractals are modules os a spiral staircase created for "Tuti Momo", a performance in 2015. These works have been restored and are the title for this exhibition. In the performance, these steps could only be used by the "Primates" - two mute and nude young men. They were the ruling characters in the performance, that included a cast of 16 others.

Crystal Balls, 2023

Resin, Mylar.

Crystalized in resin is the material used by the Crystal Beings - the recurrent characters of the Artist's work. The characters are performed regularly by all sorts of people. The Crystal Beings (aka Invisible Men) are silver-mirrored beings that are anonymous and represent the Soul unattached to Identity. At the same time, they reflect their sorroundings - mirroring the Other.

Becoming a Crystal Being allows one to become absolutely anonymous while sleeping silently behind the mirror. But at the same time it is demanding work, forcing us to look inwards while being silent witnesses to the outside. This is a demanding role and position to be in.

Crystal Balls are like fossils for prosperity, preserving the Crystal Being experience and certainly retaining the DNA of the soul who has played the part. The Crystal Balls are energysing.

Meditations, 2012-2023

Colour markers, acrylic sheet, wood, glass.

Meditations are about the energetic fields around us and without our bodies. Like colour baths they are the Artist's most soothing works. These are intuitive pieces that are developed over a longer period of time.

Existentialist (Crystal Being series), 2023

Digital print on canvas.

Existentialist series is about healing the soul. The digital collage of gemstones and tree branches elude to a spirit that is in constant flow between Nirvana and Chaos. In this work, the central figure being healed is the Crystal Being.

Maya Mirrors, 2023

Shattered mirrors, paper cut-outs, glue, MDF.

The first Maya Mirror arose from a large mirror accidentally being shattered in the studio. As to liberate myself from the influence and fragility of belief systems, I broke a few more in an act of freedom from the psychic conditions to what is believed to be a sad omen. The paper cut-outs are from catalogues of auction houses, it shows a game of artists' works, collectibles, names and prices. Its construction is like a puzzle - a constant negotiation with the shapes of the broken pieces. This work speaks about games, markets, constructs and influences.

Tokens (football), 2023

Resin, pigment, football stickers.

Tokens in out culture are a tool of markets, maily used as a representation to something else, they facilitate transactions. Football stickers are a nod to our childhood and the instict of competition.
